  In the Centro Histórico - and I don't need to tell you that this is the prettiest, best-kept and overall winner of town centres in Andalucia - they have started putting up ceramic plaques with extracts from poetry. Beautiful plaques in the traditional style with lovely extracts. Even if you cannot understand Spanish, you'll enjoy spotting them and just admiring them.

  As part of its wish to bring culture into the day-to-day lives of the local people, here in Estepona they are matching the Ruta de los murales - the walk with enormous mural paintings - with the Ruta de la Poesía, a walk with poetry.

  The streets in themselves are SO lovely, but seeking out and finding the poetry on the walls was an extra bonus. We couldn't read some of them - and not just the one in Arabic! - but managed to grasp the meaning of most of them.

  Start walking around the Centro Histórico and keep your eyes peeled for the plaques. Posting here photos of some of the ones that l have spotted. Have you seen others that have been missed?

  Others have been put up by different poets. In the Calle Caridad - a popular pedestrianised street lined with restaurants - they have put up the 'Poema del buen comer', a poem devoted to the pleasures of eating. How about that!

  The earliest ones were by the Málaga poet Manuel Alcántara, in the newly-restored little square named after him, with a beautiful downhill-flowing fountain in the middle.

  There is also a poem by Andrej Sladkovic, a Slovakian poet, and they have also put up extracts from works written in Arabic, English, French, German and Scottish. Works written in Scottish? They must mean Rabbie Burns.
