The Centro Histórico is an absolute MUST-SEE at any time of the year, but obviously with this fiesta it's even more special.
  • Felipe

This means. literally, the Crosses of the month of May.

The shops with sunglasses and beach toys and souvenirs (and not that many of them) are not here in the Old Town but near the beach. Here in the Old Town there are bars and restaurants, but also Butcher's, Greengrocers, Iron-monger's, because this is where people live. This is the Spanish heart of the town, a heart that is open to you as you stroll around.

They are pretty because there are thousands and thousands of flower pots on the walls, with geraniums and other plants carefully planted by the Municipal Gardens, and larger, colour-matching. pots with little trees (ah - the sweet-smelling orange blossom!) or colourful climbers (wow - the vibrant bougainvillea!) outside front doors.

It might be a religious group, one of the Brotherhoods that has an Easter procession, or a group of friends and neighbours, a youth group, even the customers of one of the butcher's have got together to produce these lovely events.

Es bastante bonito, pero al estar en cuesta no es recomendables para gente que no pueda subir cuestas, sin contar que no hay aparcamientos lo que es lógico ya que es el centro histórico.

The pots are always riotous . . . great fat flower-heads weighing down the stems and falling over the edge of the pots.

How many hours have I wandered around the streets of Estepona? Uncountable!

If you are lucky, your visit to the lovely Centro Histórico will coincide with the beautiful Cruces de Mayo fiesta in Estepona.
  • Jose

Over the first 3 or 4 days in May, Estepona has started reviving a very old fiesta and tradition, the Cruces de Mayo.

We come here to stay pretty often, and each time we come, I go most days for a stroll, a linger, a while-away the lovely hours in the prettiest streets that you'll find anywhere.

You've seen Seville. You've seen Córdoba. You've seen Marbella. You've even seen Frigiliana.

They are pretty because the pots are of different colours in different streets. Blue, orange, yellow, green, red, and spotted.

Various groups of people - usually linked to the Easter Week religious brotherhoods - get together and decorate a cross with flowers, and also by surrounding it with typical and traditional items. A guitar. An embroidered shawl. Old earthenware pots. Beautiful items. Making an artistic display that everyone comes to admire.

They are pretty because they are clean, with newly paved or pebbled-patterned roadways (hiding the newly-built water and sewage systems, to improve conditions for the local residents).

And they are pretty because the residents are so proud of their streets - you will see housewives sweeping the roadway outside their door, or an elderly gentleman carefully pruning a plant.

Each group does it in a different square in the lovely old town of Estepona. There are 10 or so, scattered all round the Centro Histórico.

As well as the crosses, there is music, dancing (can you do flamenco?), barbecues, drinks and general merriment.

They are nothing compared to Estepona and its Old Town. Nothing! This is the BEST thing that you've ever seen!
  • Silvana

So it's the most beautiful town you've ever seen, and this was even recognised nationally when, recently, the Secretary of State for Tourism came to Estepona. Looking around the beautiful Historic Centre that has given the town its name of The Garden of the Costa del Sol, she said
